A young married couple scrape together an income by gathering wild mushrooms in the woodlands of New Jersey. They sell their haul to restaurants in New York but the transient lifestyle provides little financial security. To improve this and fulfil a personal career path Regina accepts a full time job in the kitchen of an upmarket restaurant. Lucien, however, is threatened by the change in dynamic and proposes that instead of selling out they give up their apartment and head to the West Coast where they can survive as itinerant foragers. Individual desires soon test the marriage in this dreamlike odyssey into a world of culinary pursuits.
