Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal's new film 'No' has continued its success, receiving a history-making Oscar nomination.

The film has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language film category, making it the first Chilean film to receive Oscar recognition.

'No' is based on actual events surrounding the story of an advertising executive who came up with a campaign to bring down General Pinochet during the 1988 Chilean referendum, Reuters reports.

'We're super happy... I mean yeah, really happy ... I'm really proud of this movie. Really proud. Not only because I think formally it's an amazing movie, I really... I mean I normally don't say these things, but I think it's a fantastic, fantastic movie, but the other reason is because it is one of the many representations of heroic feat that Chileans did. It is a triumph of democracy,' Bernal told Reuters of the nomination.

The film has already won the Art Cinema Award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film at the Sao Paulo Film Festival.

The inspiration behind Bernal's character, Eugenio Garcia, who worked on the 1988 campaign as an advertising executive, says there is Chilean support behind the film.

'It's emotional for... it's very emotional for the people in Chile because you remember years of conflicts in the country, and for me and for my generation it's very... it's a very strong moment in our lives,' he told Reuters.
