A massive installation of JRR Tolkien's creepy character Gollum has been unveiled at Wellington Airport ahead of The Hobbit premiere.

The 12-metre installation, created by Weta Workshop, features Gollum's upper torso and face, with his right arm outstretched and reaching for one of a number of large fish also created by the studio.

The installation is suspended from the ceiling in the airport's food court.

The pale, scrawny and half-nude Gollum, who featured in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, along with The Hobbit, is a character performed by actor Andy Serkis.

The first movie of The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, will have its world premiere in Wellington on November 28, before going on global release on December 14.
