DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg is to receive an honorary Oscar from officials in Hollywood.

Katzenberg, who is also a successful film producer and philanthropist, has been given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award after raising money for education, art and health-related causes.

He has also helped to raise $200m for the Motion Picture and Television Fund while serving as the organisation's chairman.

The Hersholt award is given by the Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "to an individual ... whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry".

Documentary maker D.A. Pennebaker, stunt performer Hal Needham and arts advocate George Stevens Jr. were selected as the winners of the Honorary Awards.

The awards, in the form of Oscar statuettes, will be presented in December.

Needham has been recognised for his pioneering role in improving stunt technology and safety procedures, as well as working on 300-strong features films including The Spirit of St. Louis, How the West Was Won and Chinatown.

Pennebaker, an Oscar nominee, was selected as a pioneer of modern non-fiction film who has directed more than 20 feature-length documentaries.

Stevens was voted for having spent a lifetime celebrating and preserving the heritage of motion pictures.

The Honorary Award is given for extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the academy.
