To the Limit

To the Limit

Rated PGParental guidance recommended

The third in a trilogy of sport-based documentaries by Austrian film-maker, Pepe Danquart, To the Limit is a bird's eye view of a sport that is growing in participation by the day: speed rock-climbing. To the Limit opened with top ten film box office results in both Germany and Austria and 190,000 viewers saw the film in cinemas in Germany alone. Director Pepe Danquart first became known to local audiences via his definitive Tour de France doco, Hell on Wheels. With To the Limit Danquart has now created the definitive film on the death defying art of vertical rock climbing!

Verdict
Though director Pepe Danquart dwells a little too long on certain elements, To The Limit succeeds because of its entertaining sibling subjects and beautiful cinematography.

Review: To the Limit

2 and a half out of 5

To The Limit showcases the world of professional rock-climbing through the eyes of brothers Thomas and Alexander Huber. These impractical, long-haired Germans attempt to break the speed-climbing record on El Capitan, the largest cliff face in California's Yosemite Valley. It takes experienced climbers three to five days to climb but, of course, for the Huber brothers, sanity rarely prevails, and they attempt to climb it in two-and-a-half hours. The film delves into the challenges that these self-proclaimed athletes face when climbing, including injuries, competition from other climbers and hazardous weather.

A great attraction of To The Limit is the spectacular footage of the pair manoeuvring up the steep cliff faces, which allows the audience to truly witness the essence of the sport. Surrounding views from both the Sierra Nevadas and Patagonian Ranges - another location they visit - also add to the aesthetics of the film. One of the focal points is the complex relationship between the Huber siblings; Thomas and Alexander work together well as partners, but this teamwork is accompanied by a great rivalry born out of their uber-competitive personalities. For the Huber brothers, their passion for mountaineering stems from a desire to face their fears, and they claim that it's the key to growing as a person. Meanwhile, fellow climbers Chongo and Dean S. Potter add a much-needed dimension with their varied perspective on the extreme sport.

Although director Pepe Danquart succeeds in capturing the skilful art of mountaineering, he gets carried away with drawn-out scenes in a film that could have been just as effectively told in under an hour. While this may deter some from the film, it remains one to watch for even the casual outdoors enthusiast.
