Review: The House Bunny
by Alexandra Coghlan, Filmink, 25/09/2008This is a comedy dumber than its heroine - which, given that lead character Shelley is a homeless ex-Playboy Bunny with-a-heart-of-gold, is quite an achievement. Having exhausted the comedic possibilities of the horror spoof Scary Movie franchise, actress Anna Faris here turns her (undeniably ample) charms to the dual service both of the Playboy phenomenon and the frat comedy, with fairly predictable results.
Kicked out of the Playboy Mansion on the eve of her twenty-seventh birthday ("That's fifty-nine in Bunny years!") thanks to a nefarious plot set in motion by a jealous rival, Shelly finds herself suddenly thrust into the cold, dark, non-pastel coloured world outside. Determined to make the most of her particular brand of "life skills", she takes on the challenge of becoming house mother to the sorority girls of Zeta Alpha Zeta. Before you have visions of identikit sorority girls cavorting around in their underwear (all in good time.), it should be explained that the Zetas are the college geeks and freaks, who - inexplicably and yet in pleasingly symbolic fashion - have lost the T and A from their house sign. Such is their unpopularity that the sorority faces losing its house charter to the scheming beauty queens of Phi Iota Mu, unless of course Shelly can transform them into man-magnets and herself into a person-of-substance in one artfully contrived blow (double entendres compulsory).
We couldn't possibly spoil the outcome of this tense dilemma, but suffice it to say that with the services of Eugene Levy (Jim's Dad from the American Pie series) and at least one ex-American Idol contestant, this comedy gives its concept the execution it deserves. Yes, in every way.
