Unfunny, mean spirited, corny and overly familiar, The Love Guru is only made watchable by the admittedly amusing performance from Justin Timberlake.

Review: The Love Guru

There's too much Austin Powers in Mike Myers' new character Guru Pitka. Or maybe there's just too much Mike Myers. He's inarguably a great talent, but he's lost his mojo in this.

Guru Pitka, an American raised in India, is a New Age darling who's jealous of Deepak Chopra's success. On a quest for Oprah Winfrey's attention, Pitka takes on celebrity client Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), an ice hockey player who's having trouble with his game and his wife. But as the vulgar, alleged jokes pile up, the chance to have a bit of satirical fun with the self-help industry is lost. Instead, the film gets corny.

Pitka is Powers in Indian guru garb. Myers has taken the international man of mystery's best moves and fused them to the worst stereotypes. The Hindu community has already protested overseas, and it would be justified if the Little People of America decided to join in. It's time to move on from dwarf jokes, which are mean and plentiful here, and aimed at Verne Troyer (Austin Powers' Mini-Me).

There's one redeeming feature - Justin Timberlake. He plays hockey hotshot Jacques "Le Coq" Grande, who is, of course, monstrously well-endowed. Timberlake goes with it, providing some of the little entertainment that can be derived. But Jessica Alba is prettily vacant as Pitka's love interest, and Ben Kingsley degrades himself as the cross-eyed Guru Tugginmypudha. Dotted with big name cameos and co-written by Myers and associate producer Graham Gordy, The Love Guru deserves some points for trying, especially for its attempt to go out with a Bollywood bang. The closing scene may be designed to leave you feeling good, but it's more likely to leave you wishing you'd seen another movie.
